Recently stumbled across this website, HandPaintedType. It's an awesome project working towards preserving and honoring the tradition of hand painted lettering in India. There are dozens of beautiful images on this website, and from my time in India, I remember seeing plenty more. It's sad to see the decline of this artform over the past few decades. But, renewed interest in the past two years I think can not only preserve but also push the art forward, bringing in new styles and practices inspired by contemporary designers and digitally based design. Check out this awesome mini-doc all about the traditional sign painters in India.
