Advertising Calligraphy

Some awesome hand calligraphy work for a vintage shop's flyer by Talya Baldwin. Talya did a great job capturing the vintage essence of classic calligraphy while incorporating some fun contemporary elements.

Monday Dribbble Hunting

After a couple week break (traveling and freelance busyness) it's nice to be back Dribble hunting. This week I've been noticing lots of nice cool winter tones in the mix. A lot of times this is intentional, but I also think there is some seasonal subconscious direction to color choice as well.

Fine Art Lettering

I recently discovered the artwork of Mark Bell. A contemporary artist working across multiple media, he creates provocative images with elusive meanings. I am especially drawn to his work with text. (believe it or not!) Some of his work is reminiscent of early conceptual and neo-concrete artwork with a contemporary spin on these subjects.

Sufjan Stevens - Silver & Gold

Sufjan Stevens has a new Christmas album (with 58 songs!) coming out this month. His album covers feature this awesome custom type that do a good job of representing the songs on this album - slightly absurd, experimental, taking holiday themes and pushing them to their boundaries. I can't wait to see the design of the extensive liner notes, posters and other print material being released with this album.

Experimental Typography

I love experimental typography. As an artist and a designer I am always looking for ways to combine the functional and the purely aesthetic. Lumen Type - the latest experiment from designer Ruslan Khasanov - is a great example of using inspiration from everyday, typically unnoticed phenomena to create a beautiful combination of conceptual art and typography. He tells Fast Co Design, “I looked at the car headlights--red and yellow circles floating on the wet road--and I found it beautiful.“ He eventually was able to simulate this effect by placing water droplets on a mirror.
